In this episode of the Inside EMS podcast, hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson are staying in the same hotel, but definitely not on the same page. The topic? Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) 鈥 is it the future of EMS, or just another flashy tool with little impact in the field?
Chris opens the discussion with skepticism, calling POCUS a 鈥渞idiculous鈥 tool that adds no value to his prehospital patient care. Kelly fires back with a defense of POCUS as a powerful, fast and non-invasive tool that can enhance clinical decision-making 鈥 if used right.
It鈥檚 a spirited back-and-forth loaded with clinical scenarios, sarcasm and a lot of 鈥渨hatever, man.鈥 Whether you鈥檙e team 鈥淧OCUS is progress鈥 or 鈥渟can and stall,鈥 this episode will get you thinking.

POCUS: Game changer or gimmick?

鈥淚f the ultrasound could be used in the back of an ambulance, that would be a major breakthrough. It is a really tough call when you are talking about possibly delaying transport when once you find out the information, you can not treat it anyway. I could see the advantage is deciding which hospital to transport, but in my very rural area, the nearest hospital is 20 minutes away no matter which way you go, so I am having trouble seeing the advantage at this stage of the game.鈥
